Weekly Vibes for October 22

Weekly Vibes for October 22

New this Week

Rest. This is new for many of you. If you are feeling overwhelmed, tired and wanting to throw in the towel on something. Don’t give up, get some rest. It is easy to run ourselves ragged in this world of non-stop commitments, expectations and to-do’s. We get lost in what we think we should do, and sometimes don’t actually get to do what we need, and what is best for us.

For this week, get some rest. This can be better sleep, quiet time, fun time, relaxing time, family time or time to yourself. It is ok to say no to something, just because you want to have a relaxing fun night with your family. This can be your best yes, and provide rest for each one of you.

Encouragement this Week

We must not confuse the command to love with the disease to please.

~ Lysa TerKeurst, “The Best Yes”

Many of us are recovering people pleasers, or still trying to recover, or don’t know how to recover. If you are constantly feeling the need to please, you must be tired. Take some time to read “The Best Yes“, and slow down a bit. I read this book years ago, when my kids were little, and it was a good start for me to realize what was the best yes for myself and my family. It is too easy to always say yes, trying to please others, while we run ourselves ragged, and in the end, our families suffer.

For me, I want to give this encouragement to my kids as well. We are in the midst of a society that is running our kids ragged. We have to teach our kids the healthy balance of doing what is best for them, being responsible and hard working, but also knowing when to say no, and not feeling the need to always please. They need to know that they shouldn’t have to say yes, or do things they don’t want to do, just to be liked by others. Teach them to choose what feels right in their heart, and many times this choice might not be popular, or comfortable, but is the best for them. Support them on this, and be sure they know you support them on this.

Don’t let ‘what others think’ bring added pressure on your kids, and don’t let ‘what others think’, influence your choices for them. Help them make these hard choices. This might be one of the most important choices we help them make.

Verse of the Week

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

– Matthew 11:28

Challenge

Take time this week to rest in some way. This can be anything that really lets you relax and enjoy time to yourself, or with those close to you. We are constantly doing so many have-to’s with our kids, but are you taking time to do something fun with them that is not really a have-to. I find that this is what truly helps my relationships with my family.

Life is fast and can be stressful. Pause and enjoy those around you. Schedule time with them, and don’t cancel if someone else asks for your time. One-on-one time with my kids brings both of us closer, we relax, and they see that they truly matter. I am with my kids all the time, but this alone time that is set aside for them, is completely different for both of us. Sometimes my kids are distracted by something else, and don’t want to go, but once I get them out, they always tell me they are glad we did it. Kids need us. Don’t let your kids, society, or anyone else tell you otherwise. We are what they need most. Yes, friends are important, but not more important than us. This book is an amazing read for this topic, “Hold on to Your Kids“.

“We have to slow the rhythm of rush in our lives so the best of who we are can emerge.”

~ Lysa TerKeurst
