I had a conversation the other day with a friend and she asked me if I had ever run a marathon. I replied that I hadn’t and wasn’t planning to, at least for now. Never say never, but I always say I’m a 5K girl. So she continued that she was thinking of signing up for one and was going to start training. She went out for about a 4 mile jog the day before and realized she really didn’t want to run a marathon. I can relate. This can happen to many of us, as we listen to what others are doing, or what seems like a great idea…but is it something we want? Is it one of our goals? What is your fitness goal?
We are all so individual, and we each have our own desires and struggles. Are you trying to get into your old jeans? Do you just want to be stronger? Maybe you really do want to run a marathon, or you are desperate just to run or walk a 5K. Are you at a plateau and nothing has changed in 6 months? Then again many of us just want to feel better and have more energy each day.
My point is that your fitness goal determines your exercise plan. You want to be doing what will help YOU reach YOUR goal. Think about what you are doing and make sure it is your plan to be on. If you have hit a plateau and you are still doing the same workout routine, it is time to change it up! If you really want to be stronger, you need some strength training at least twice a week. It does not have to be a complicated weight lifting routine, unless your goal is to enter the next strong woman competition, which is an awesome goal as well! Buddy training is great, but if the routine is working for your buddy’s goals and not yours, re-evaluate.
No matter what your goal is, we should all be moving in some way for the sake of feeling good. If you haven’t made plans to exercise today, there is still time (plenty of it since the time changed) for a walk, family bike ride or a set of lunges tonight. I promise you will feel good after. Try to just find 20 minutes and take the kids along if they are with you. They need to move too. π
Enjoy today…just today for now,
Kelley
