Do you do any type of resistance training at all? Depending on what your goals are, you probably should incorporate some strength training into your routine. This can be hard for some of us just because we don’t know where to start. First, strength training can be lifting weights, using resistance tubing or even just doing body weight exercises, like lunges, squats or push-ups. By challenging your muscles with resistance, you are boosting your metabolism. As your muscle mass increases, your metabolism speeds up and your body fat will decrease. You get stronger, which helps you feel good about yourself and helps decrease injuries. Stronger core muscles can help alleviate back pain. Strength training can help improve your posture and increase bone density. These are benefits we all can enjoy, but as we get older, the reasons to strength train become even more important. Where do you start? If you are unsure about strength training, you should learn some principles before continuing. It is essential to learn proper form, breathing and technique so you are getting the most from your routine. Strength training should be slow and controlled to actually challenge and overload the muscles and not hurt yourself. Find a trainer, class or reputable DVD to help get into a safe and effective routine. I am going to try to coordinate a local, fun boot camp class in the near future to help teach a basic strength routine to anyone interested. Stay in touch or let me know if you are interested and I will be sure to keep you informed.
